Dec 24th-
Venezuelan Christmas NIT!!
While only five Americans made the trip, onething is certain, all five will return soon to
this land of paradise. Picture a country that's inexpensive, has spectacular
landscape, beautiful women everywhere, with great hospitality and you have Venezuela
in a nutshell. There are not too many places where you can spend five days and only
spend $50 as many of us did. The Venezuelan people are to be commended for their generous
hospitality and eagerness to meet and learn from Los Gringos!!
Team USA/FlagMag performed a few Flag clinics and played both 9Man and
4man in the double elimination tournament. While Team FlagMag/USA never lost a game two
games came down to the final play. In 4Man, Quaker showed it will be a team to be taken
seriously at the World Cup as it gave FlagMag a good scare only losing by 6 points. This
team has great speed and with a few more games will be top notch.
In 9Man, Team FlagMag acquired five Venezuelans to round out the
team and survived a good scare from the gargolas. With team FlagMag leading 13-7 and 1:17
remaining the Gargloas had the ball and where marching down field when MVP Marquette Smith
Intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards to ice the win. "This team has improved
greatly from the last time we played them in September, I was truly impressed with the
flag grabbing and play calls. They have truly gained some valuable playing experience and
will be a strong contender at this years world cup" stated FlagMag president Jim
Zimolka
FlagMag/USA went on to win the 4Man Title by defeating Diablos 32-22, but decided
to bow out of the 9Man. This would enable the top two Venezuelan Teams(Atlas and Omega) to
battle it out for a true national title and what a battle it was. These two evenly matched
teams swapped scores and interceptions throughout the game. Atlas was up 20-13 with
under one minute remaining when Omega marched into scoring position like a
well oiled machine. With only 4 seconds remaining Omega QB Cesar H connected on a 10
yard pass to Jose Alejandro Machado to bring the score 20-19. Omega elected to
go for the win and the Atlas defense came up big as an Atlas defender pulled the flag of a
Omega player on the 3 yardline giving them the win and the first Venezuelan National
Championship.Atlas's Tony Villanova-WR was the MVP.
In the Women's 4Man, the championship game went to overtime
as the score was tied at 13. On the first series Gargolas Gret Montiel intercepted an
Omega pass and scored a TD for the win 20-13. MVP was Ale Castillo who scored both
Gargolas Td's.
The tournament proved to be extremely successful as the Americans were well taken cared of
and the Venezuelans gained valuable playing experience. We would like to thank all of our
fiends in Venezuela for there charming personalities and generous Hospitality.
Muchos Gracias Amigos!!!
