College Nationals

New Orleans,LA
-
The largest 7Man no contact flag football tournament of the year took place in the big easy as  an amazing  130 teams competed at the 2001 College Nationals held at the University of New Orleans from Dec. 27-31.

The 2001 tournament drew 57 teams from the Men's division, 27 Women's teams, 22 Co-Rec teams, 18 teams from the Men's Open division, 3 teams from the Women’s Open division and 3 teams CoRec Open division. Both the Women and CoRec open are newly added divisions. Last years event had 127 teams.

The 7Man Screen game is played on a 40 x 80 yard field with a one yard rush. Players are allowed to stand in front of defenders (screen, basketball picks) but are not allowed to have contact with them. There are two 24 minute half’s with the clock running continuous until the last two minutes, where the clock stops on in completions, out of bounds, change of possession, and scores. Teams are placed in pools of three teams, were they play tow games and the top two advance to single elimination playoffs.
In the Men’s Collegiate division  #1 Ranked Shut’ em Down won the championship for the  first time by defeating #3  Florida A & M’s Black Magic 32-22. Shutem down was led by QB Troy Moore who was earlier selected to play for TEAM
USA at this years World Cup in Miami, FL slated for Feb 20/21. Shut’em down had an impressive year by winning the College Nationals and the World Cup qualifier in Tampa this past October. Their next quest will be at the World Cup open tournament in February where they will test there skills against teams from all over the World.
In the Women’s collegiate division, #1 ranked Aquilas Blancas of
Mexico City, Mexico claimed their 5th Consecutive national championship by defeating an exhausted #16 Samford 38-0. Samford played the entire tournament with only 7players. Thier two previous playoff games came down to the final play as they defeated N. Georgia in the quarter finals   21-20 in Overtime and in the semifinals they beat Georgia Southern 13-7 on a 80 yard TD bomb in the closing seconds. The Aquilas blancas toughest challenge came from Dream Team of Southern in the semi-finals as they won 18-6. In the first round of the playoffs for the Aguilas Blancas, a potential World Cup match up, Fly De lys of Montréal, Canada held the Mexicans scoreless in the first half. The Canadians kept the game close but were not able to score against the tough Mexican defense as they lost 20-0.  The Mexicans defense only gave up 12 points in 6 games.
The Mexicans were earlier reported as not attending the tournament, but they aquired there visas in time to compete in the event.
    In the CoRec division,
Florida beat WYP of LA Monroe 32-15 for its first title.  Florida thumped Our Lady of the Lake in the semis 48-9 and thrashed the All Stars of USM 33-10 in the quarter finals.WYP  defeated new comer Central Michigan 15-2 in the semis.

In the Men’s Open division, #2 Hitmen won their second consecutive title by easily defeating their opponents. All games were won by the mercy rule (18 points or more in the final 2 minutes) The Hitmen thumped LA Independent in the championship 28-6. The Hitmen were led by Team
USA players Darryn Melerine and Rob Sloane. The Hitmen are winners of the World Cup qualifier in Dallas this past september and will be looking to take on the #1 Ranked team in the World, Cardio Energy of Montreal Canada at the World Cup open tournament in Feb.
In the Women’s open, the Aquilas Blancas of Mexico combined with some Americans to win the title. The Mexicans narrowly defeated home town team Ice3 24-13. Ice3 put up a good challenge but came up short in the first championship for women’s open at college nationals. In the Corec open, the Pack Attack defeated Ikonz of Atlanta 35-6.

NIRSA does not endorse College Nationals!!

NIRSA(National Intramural Recreational Sports Association)
has withdrawn its endorsement of the College Nationals. NIRSA is currently in a bitter dispute with the events sports marketing company, Campus Concepts.
NIRSA states that  Campus Concepts has
Historically poor service quality and fulfillment issues . NIRSA also claims Campus Concepts owes them money. Campus Concepts was only involved with the Nationals and only one regional(Nebraska) this past season.

FlagMag's Thumbs up & Thumbs Down

Thumbs Up
Four Refs per game!!! (No other tournament offers this)
New Orleans- excellent choice for a tournament!!
Bourbon St- where else can you have a non stop party??
Staff- several colleges from all over the USA working together
most organized Flag Football tournament there is.
Tournament draws its first Canadian Team.
Not many forefeits this year!!
Largest Womens tournament in the USA.

Thumbs Down
Flag-guard is not a loss of down!(this rule has to change)
Non College students playing in collegiate division
(taking one class or faculty members should not be considered as college students)
A few Referees need to get off there mighty horse!
In the womens championship game, the Samford coach was called for a personal foul for telling the ref to get in the proper position. Three plays in a row the opposing team(Aguilas Blancas) threw forward passes past the line of scrimmage. None of the four officials were on the line of scrimmage, the entire game.
On another field a referee told FlagMag they couldnt take photos inside the
20 yardline!! (How in the World did this guy get to ref at Nationals?)
3 point extra point play from the 20 yardline? Is this basketball?
Cold and Rainy-Can we pick a new date?? December in NO is never warm.
Sunday and Monday tournament for Open. This is unheard of...
A and B divisions need to added to all divisions..
